Ceylon tea regions, explained
5 min read · By the Ellara Ceylon team

Sri Lanka grows tea across six main regions. Altitude shapes the flavor: high-grown teas are usually lighter and more delicate, mid-grown teas rounder, and low-grown teas darker and stronger.
- Nuwara Eliya (high): light, delicate and fragrant.
- Dimbula (high): bright, brisk and refreshing.
- Uda Pussellawa (high): fragrant and mellow.
- Uva (high): distinctive aroma and a smooth, mellow cup.
- Kandy (mid): round, robust and full.
- Ruhuna (low): dark, strong and rich.
Only tea that is grown and made in Sri Lanka can be called Ceylon tea. When you shop, look for the region on the tin; it tells you a lot about what to expect.
